Students Laboratory Training

Margaret Spigner (teacher) and students of the Research Class at the West Ashley High School were invited to the National Ocean Services (NOAA) laboratory on September 6, 2005 in order to be trained on the different instruments and techniques used to study water quality in aquatic ecosystems.

The training included:

  • use of water quality instruments
  • use of ELISA kits for pesticide analysis
  • use of HACH kits for nutrient analysis
  • fecal coliform bacteria (FCB) culture and their quantification
  • selection for E. coli strains and their resistance using the Antibiotic Resistance Analysis (ARA) technique
  • phytoplankton community preservation and quantification using a hemacytometer and a light microscope
